London Introduction

Haymills London Office is located in the heart of the West End and covers the London Boroughs and the Home Counties. It is a close knit team which includes a mixture of staff who have gained experience from a trade’s background or from previously working for other major contractors such as Trollope & Colls, Laing, Costain, Mowlem and Kier.

An integral part of the London Team is the Special Works Unit, which controls our direct labour which includes bricklayers, painters, joiners, plumbers and lead workers. They will undertake schemes up to a value of £5m themselves which have included bespoke projects at private schools, most recently at The Royal Ballet School in Richmond Park, where 85% of the sensitive improvement works on a Grade I listed building were carried out by our in-house labour and skilled operatives. Each year twelve to fourteen apprentices are taken on to help in ensuring the future of the industry.

The focus of the London team now is to strengthen its position in the commercial, residential and mixed-use sectors. It is also looking to move into the hotel market, with a specific focus on the luxury end of the market including mid-scale branded and boutique hotels. In addition, they are researching ways in which they can ensure that buildings are energy efficient and achieve Part L of the Building Regulations. At present, there is stronger emphasis on the Business Strategy than ever before, with a competent team in place to assess projects at the early pre-construction stage. They are able to provide Clients with advice on design, construction solutions and indicative cost plans.

In conclusion, the London Business Unit is a close knit ‘family’ and successful team. They are looking to better their expected profit margin, prudently grow their turnover to circa £100m over the next five years and strengthen their position in the London West End and City.

Over the past few years, this particular office has established itself in the commercial, residential and mixed-use developments sectors, including a £35m project in Croydon. This was targeted as its main goal some three years ago. Prior to its entry into these markets, it had gained a reputation for delivering high quality projects within the health and education sectors. This meant working within live school campuses, managing challenges such as interfaces with teachers and pupils, sequencing works within existing school buildings for holiday periods, access and egress for delivery vehicles through the school campuses. In addition to this, experience has been gained working on health care projects with regards to HTMs, HBNs, consumerism, Patient Line and anti ligature design in mental health units.
